That Photo on the Wall

by Gerald Jatzek

That Photo on the Wall

The five of them
wore hats and coats.
Their instruments grew from their hands.

They played by ear. Their names were lost.
They were a band from Latvia. That’s all

I know

their songs were full of grace and beauty.
Although I’ve never heard them play,

their music shields me every time
I hear the sound
of marching feet.
